About the Event

The Queen’s Baton Relay is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton carries a message from the Head of the Commonwealth, currently Queen Elizabeth II. The Relay traditionally begins at Buckingham Palace in London as a part of the city's Commonwealth Day festivities.

The Queen entrusts the baton to the first relay runner. At the Opening Ceremony of the Games, the final relay runner hands the baton back to the Queen or her representative, who reads the message aloud to officially open the Games.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) began on 7th October 2021 at a special event at Buckingham Palace.

Her Majesty the Queen placed her message to the Commonwealth into the Baton, signifying the start of a 294-day Relay through the 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Baton will inspire people of the Commonwealth to come together and host moments of celebration ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Queens’s Baton is scheduled to arrive in Zambia on 19 November 2021.

CGA Zambia in collaboration with British Council and Play It Forward will ensure that Zambia has an opportunity of

celebrating the QBR in four towns namely, Lusaka, Kafue, Choma, and Livingstone between 19 and 21 September 2021.
