ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: ZAMBIAN BASEBALL5 AND HOCKEY PLAYER DAVID KALUNGA

Meet David Kalunga, a Baseball5 and Hockey player, born on 14 February 2006.

He grew up in a lively neighborhood with many different people, where some friends were involved in substance abuse and violence.

Despite these challenges, Kalunga stayed focused and calm because of his quiet and introverted nature, which helped him handle the difficulties around him.

His life began to change in 2013 when he discovered his love for sports.

“I explored various sports, including football, netball, athletics, and boxing. However, it was hockey that truly captured my heart in 2015 at OYDC Zambia -Sports Development Centre,” said Kalunga.

He later discovered Baseball5 in 2022, and it became an integral part of athletic pursuits.

Later in Baseball5, his team won a bronze medal at the Youth African Championship Games in Ghana (2023) and qualified for the Youth World Cup in Turkey (2023) where he led the team with quality leadership as captain.

In 2025, he was part of the team that represented Zambia hockey in the U21 Africa Cup in Namibia.

This year, Kalunga was called to play for the National team Baseball5, and they won a silver medal at the regional games in Lesotho 2025.

The same year, Baseball5 qualified for the upcoming Africa Championship that Zambia will host from November 5 to 8 , 2025.

David Kalunga remains determined to continue excelling in sports and hopes to inspire young athletes to stay disciplined, focused, and passionate about their goals.
