Zambian boxer Margret Tembo has fought her way to the top, turning a childhood dream into a remarkable career. From watching local boxing legend Esther Phiri to representing her country at the Commonwealth Games competing in a 48kg, which is minimum weight.
Her journey is a testament to hard work and determination.
Tembo started boxing at the age of 12, back when she used to watch Esther Phiri.
“I got inspired by her hard work and dedication, I told myself that one day I want to be like her,” said Tembo.
Tembo’s dream became a reality when she competed at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, an experience she describes as unforgettable.

“Representing my country is such an honor and a privilege. I am looking forward to having more experiences like that, being part of bigger games,” she said.
One of the standout moments in her career came when she was chosen as Zambia’s flag bearer at the Commonwealth Games a first for her.
“At first, I was a bit nervous,” she admitted. “But knowing how much I had put in, not just physically but mentally, and having an experienced professional coach, I knew I was ready to give it my all.”
Boxing has taught Tembo more than just physical skills. “It has taught me discipline, both inside and outside the gym,” she explained. “When I am outside the gym, I know the person I am and the people I’m surrounded by”, she shares.
Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. After the Commonwealth Games, the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) awarded her a scholarship, a moment she described as a dream come true.
“I did not expect it, but I knew that one day my hard work would pay off,” she said.
Tembo now has her eyes set on future competitions. “My goal for the next Commonwealth Games is to come back with a medal, and I know I will. Beyond that, I am looking forward to being a two-time Olympian.”
For young aspiring athletes, Tembo offers words of encouragement. “Where they are, I was once at that stage. It’s because of hard work, determination, and the love of what I do that I’ve come this far. Always love what you do and work hard for it because nothing comes from a silver spoon.”
As she continues to chase her dreams, Tembo hopes her story will inspire the next generation. “I am happy that I inspire a lot of young girls out there, and I have yet to do more.”
