The Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia (CGA) marked Commonwealth Day at the Olympafrica Centre with the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
Speaking at the event, CGA Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Boniface Kambikambi stated that the theme underscores the values, partnerships, and unity linking Commonwealth nations.

Kambikambi noted that sport remains a powerful tool for unlocking opportunities for young people across the Commonwealth. He added that the Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia recognises the role sport plays not only in competition but also in promoting unity, social development, and national pride.
“As we commemorate this day, it is also important to highlight the significance of women’s empowerment and gender equality in sport. Women have continued to demonstrate remarkable leadership and excellence as athletes, coaches, and administrators,” he said.
He further emphasised that the continued commitment to inclusiveness reflects the values of the Commonwealth and reinforces efforts to create a fair and supportive space where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Kambikambi also encouraged athletes to remain focused and dedicated as they prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, urging them to represent Zambia with pride on the international stage.
Meanwhile, Ackim Banda, country manager for the British Council of Zambia (BCZ), said the day serves as a reminder to reaffirm the shared commitment to empowering young people, strengthening partnerships, and promoting inclusive opportunities across the Commonwealth.
Banda noted that by working together, governments, institutions, and communities, the Commonwealth can continue to create pathways that support innovation, leadership, and prosperity for both current and future generations.
Also speaking at the event, Sikela Namangolwa from the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia reminded athletes that they are key role models in promoting environmental sustainability. Namangolwa encouraged them to use their influence and platforms to advocate for climate action.
Boxer Margret Tembo, who represented Zambia at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, thanked the Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia for bringing athletes together to celebrate Commonwealth Day. The day, which falls on 9 March, was commemorated in Zambia on 10 March, providing an opportunity for athletes to interact and celebrate the spirit of the Commonwealth through sport.
The commemoration also featured a session on Commonwealth values and a tree-planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental conservation and climate action. Several athletes were in attendance, and sports demonstrations in judo and taekwondo were conducted.
