The Commonwealth Games Association of Zambia has congratulated Dr Donald Rukare on his election as President of Commonwealth Sport (CS), marking a historic moment as he becomes the first leader from the Africa region to take the prestigious role.

CGA Zambia President Alfred Foloko praised Dr Rukare’s extensive experience, commitment, and vision for transforming the Commonwealth Sport Movement.

“On behalf of the CGA Zambia, I extend our warmest congratulations to Dr Donald Rukare on his well-deserved election as President of Commonwealth Sport,” said Foloko.

"His leadership, integrity, and long standing dedication to sport and development make him the right person to guide the Movement at this important time. As an African colleague and counterpart, we are immensely proud of this achievement.”

Dr Rukare’s election comes at a strategic moment for the Movement, with excitement building toward the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and preparations underway for the landmark Centenary Games in Amdavad, India, in 2030.

With over three decades of experience in sport, law, diplomacy, and development, he has previously served as World Aquatics Bureau Member, Vice President of Africa Aquatics, President of Commonwealth Games Uganda, Vice President of Commonwealth Sport, and most recently, Interim CS President.

Foloko noted that Dr. Rukare’s athlete- centred approach and commitment to strengthening member associations aligns with Zambia’s own aspirations for growth and excellence in sport.

He said his election is not only a win for the Commonwealth Sport Movement but also a proud moment for the continent.

"We are confident that under his leadership, athletes across the Commonwealth will be given even greater opportunities to excel," said Foloko.

Dr Rukare has pledged to lead with transparency, passion, and unity, emphasising stronger partnerships, global fan engagement, and sustainable hosting models for future Games.

Among his top priorities is enhancing support for member Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs). He also plans to scale up key programmes such as GAPS, which advances inclusive sport pathways, and eqUIP, designed to nurture and empower youth leaders across the Commonwealth.

CGA Zambia joins the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories in celebrating his election and looks forward to supporting a new era of excellence, inclusion, and innovation under his presidency.
