The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has launched a two-day Empowering Women in Sports Journalism Workshop aimed at strengthening the role and visibility of women in sports media.
The workshop, running from November 5 to 6, 2025, is being held in Lilongwe, Malawi, bringing together journalists and facilitators within and across the country.
The initiative seeks to equip female sports journalists with skills, insights, and professional networks to promote gender equality and enhance media coverage in the sporting sector.

Representing the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) is Elizabeth Muchoma, an assistant Media and Communications Officer, who joined other delegates in exploring key issues affecting women in sports reporting.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, MOC President Hon. Jappie Mhango commended the organizing team for hosting the first-ever workshop dedicated to empowering female sports journalists.
Mhango emphasized the need for women to take proactive steps in occupying spaces within sports media.
“Women must claim their space because it will never be given if they don’t take action,” said Mhango.
He further highlighted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Charter clearly calls for efforts to bridge the gender gap in all areas of sport, including media.
“Sports journalism is a lucrative field. You have to start where you are and aim for the global stage,” Mhango added.
Throughout the two days, participants will engage in discussions covering Olympic values in sports media coverage, basics of sports reporting, gender-sensitive journalism, governance in sports, and media ethics in sports journalism.
The workshop forms part of MOC’s broader agenda to promote gender inclusivity and leadership within sports structures in Malawi and the region.
