Updated: Aug 11, 2023

The Zambia Baseball & Softball Association (ZBSA), in partnership with the OlympAfrica Centre in Lusaka, has launched the first Baseball5 League. This partnership has led to the introduction of local tournaments that will run for 8 weeks, targeting 20 teams from across Lusaka to promote the sport.

Over the weekend, the first tournament was held at the OlympAfrica Centre in Lusaka, with 15 participating teams. Kenny Matishi, the association’s General Secretary, states that through these local tournaments, they are grooming the kids for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games debut and the African Beach Games.

The Zambia Youth Baseball5 Team (U18) has successfully qualified to compete in the 2023 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Youth Baseball5 World Cup, which will take place in Ankara, Turkey, from the 10th to the 15th of October 2023.

Baseball5 (U18) National Team

Baseball5 has evolved into a rapidly expanding athletic discipline that embraces younger athletes and will now appear as a medal sport at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2026 in Dakar, Senegal.

Zambia's Baseball5 Teams are currently placed 6th in Africa in the Senior National Team on the Continental Level and 3rd in the Youth Category.

The local tournaments are aimed at helping the association create opportunities for the growing sport of Baseball5 in communities across the country and throughout the continent.

Despite being introduced only in 2019, Zambia is ranked 28th globally out of 40 countries in Baseball5.
