NOCZ Urges Stronger Governance as General Secretaries Seminar Concludes

The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) has reiterated its commitment to stronger sports governance following the successful General Secretaries Seminar in Lusaka on 28 February 2026.

NOCZ President Alfred Foloko commended General Secretaries from National Federations for their active participation under the theme “Organisational Governance Principles.” He described the seminar as a strategic platform to enhance governance and administration in Zambia’s sports sector.

Foloko noted that the strong turnout reflected a shared commitment among federation leaders to improving the management of sport in the country. He emphasised that such seminars are not merely routine meetings, but critical opportunities for reflection, alignment, and institutional strengthening, benefiting both athletes and the nation.

However, the NOCZ President also expressed disappointment that some federations did not attend, stating that capacity-building platforms are vital for fostering shared understanding and progress. He encouraged all federations to fully embrace future initiatives, stressing that the NOCZ remains committed to inclusivity and supporting the growth and development of every affiliate.

During the seminar, participants engaged in several key discussions aimed at enhancing governance and administration in sport. These included sessions on the Mental Health Framework for Elite Athletes, which underscored the importance of safeguarding athlete wellbeing, as well as deliberations on national sports policy and government expectations for federations.

A panel discussion on the implementation of strategic plans by National Federations provided practical insights into turning strategy into action, while sessions on media engagement highlighted the importance of effective communication and reputation management in today’s digital era.

Foloko reminded participants that General Secretaries play a critical role as custodians of daily federation operations, urging them to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership in their work. He stressed that the true impact of the seminar would be measured by the reforms implemented within federations upon returning to their respective organisations.

He also paid tribute to the NOCZ Secretariat for successfully organising the seminar and thanked facilitators and presenters for guiding the discussions.

Meanwhile, NOCZ Secretary General/CEO Boniface Kambikambi expressed gratitude to all participants for their active engagement throughout the two-day seminar.

He thanked the General Secretaries for their contributions to the discussions and urged them to remain committed to implementing the resolutions and governance principles agreed upon during the sessions, emphasising that consistency and adherence to these discussions would strengthen their respective federations and the wider sports movement.
