The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), in collaboration with the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF), hosted a Mental Health Workshop for athletes under the theme “Strong Minds, Strong Performance - Mental Health in Sports."
The workshop was held on November 29, 2025, at the Olympafrica Centre.
NOCZ Safeguarding Officer Prudence Nswana, in her opening remarks, urged athletes to prioritise their mental wellbeing, noting that a strong mind plays a vital role in sustaining competitive performance.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr Mwamba Banda, who delivered an engaging session covering topics including understanding mental health in sport, common mental health disorders in athletes, mindset and self-awareness, resilience building, emotional fitness, financial discipline, team culture, peer support, and self-care and help-seeking pathways.
Dr Banda said athletes must prioritise self-awareness, explaining that positive self-talk and recognising their own achievements help strengthen mental resilience and confidence.
Speaking during the event, NOCZ Medical Commission Chairperson Dr Chanda Shula commended the initiative, stating that the sports sector often places greater focus on competition than on sports medicine and science. He emphasised that mental health is a key pillar in athlete development, helping improve focus, motivation, and overall performance.
Dr Shula added that strengthening mental health support structures will help athletes cope with pressure, prevent burnout, and build successful and sustainable sporting careers.
Several athletes attended the workshop and appreciated the key topics which were covered to help their well-being.
