The National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) has commended two Zambian wrestlers, Gilbert Mwamba and Martine Jere, for representing the country at the African Wrestling Championship held in Egypt from 27th April to 4th May.
NOCZ Secretary General/CEO, Boniface Kambikambi, expressed happiness that, despite the strong competition at the championship, the Zambian athletes demonstrated great determination and resilience throughout the tournament.

He highlighted that Gilbert Mwamba’s match victory stood out as a positive achievement for the team and a clear sign of progress, adding that the experience gained from the competition will be vital in shaping future preparations and strengthening Zambia’s wrestling development programme.
Mwamba and Jere competed in Freestyle and Beach Wrestling, coached by Eugine Chipokolo.
Coach Chipokolo said the competition had offered valuable lessons and helped identify areas that require strengthening as Zambia works toward building a more competitive wrestling programme.
“This competition has shown us that we need to regroup, train harder, and recruit more wrestlers across the country. Championships like these require a full squad, and we must ensure we are well prepared for future participation,” said Chipokolo.
The coach also expressed appreciation to the National Olympic Committee of Zambia for facilitating the team’s travel.
“I would like to sincerely thank the NOCZ for providing the air tickets, which made our participation possible. I also extend gratitude to the Wrestling Association of Zambia and United World Wrestling for their continued support,” he added.
The NOCZ has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth and development of sport in Zambia, including emerging disciplines such as wrestling, and recognises the importance of continued international participation in order to improve athlete performance and build national capacity.
