Zambia Volleyball Association (ZAVA) have organised a national volleyball club championship to be held from Thursday, December 17 to 20 at OYDC – Sports Development Centre, National Sports Development Centre (NASDEC) and Zamsure in Lusaka.
According to a statement released by ZAVA on Wednesday morning, the three-day-long competition is also being used as a selection phase for the Zambia’s provisional volleyball teams ahead of international schedules in 2021.
"Travelling teams so far, Nakonde has arrived in Lusaka while Indeni will arrive on Thursday," ZAVA General secretary wrote in the statement released to media houses.
Five women’s and 11 men’s teams across the country have so far registered to take part, among them Green Buffaloes, Nakonde, NAPSA and Green Eagles.
The tournament will be a short return for a sport that has not seen any league action this year due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic that disrupted their season which was supposed to begin in April.
With the Olympic qualifiers not yet concluded for beach volleyball, ZAVA will also have one eye on ensuring that they qualify the national team to Tokyo next year.
The women’s team has already progressed to the final round of qualifiers and are set to face nine other countries for two African places at the Olympic games while the men’s team will have to navigate their way through Group A where they will face hosts Mozambique, Nigeria, Tunisia and Congo Brazzaville.
The winner will qualify to the final round for a chance to represent Africa and also be crowned champion of the Continental Cup.
